Palmer, the relationship between spinal alignment and health has been observed for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptian and Indian hieroglyphics depict early spinal manipulations. Greek physician <strong data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"683\">Hippocrates<\/strong>, often referred to as the father of medicine, emphasized spinal health with his famous quote:<br data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"780\" \/><strong data-start=\"780\" data-end=\"834\">\u201cLook well to the spine for the cause of disease.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"836\" data-end=\"873\">The First Chiropractic Adjustment<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"1178\">In Davenport, Iowa, D.D. Palmer\u2014who practiced magnetic healing\u2014met Harvey Lillard, a janitor who had lost his hearing. After discovering a misaligned vertebra, D.D. Palmer performed what would become the first chiropractic adjustment. Harvey\u2019s hearing was restored, and a new health profession was born.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1180\" data-end=\"1204\">D.D. Palmer later wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1206\" data-end=\"1320\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1320\">\u201cThere was nothing accidental about this&#8230; it was specific, so much that no other Chiropractor has equaled it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1322\" data-end=\"1375\">B.J. Palmer and the Development of the Profession<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"1574\">D.D. Palmer\u2019s son, <strong data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1411\">B.J. Palmer<\/strong>, expanded on the philosophy, science, and art of Chiropractic. He founded <strong data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1520\">Palmer College of Chiropractic<\/strong>, where thousands of chiropractors have since trained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1895\">B.J. Palmer\u2019s focus was on identifying and adjusting <strong data-start=\"1629\" data-end=\"1655\">vertebral subluxations<\/strong>\u2014misalignments in the spine that interfere with the nervous system\u2019s ability to transmit mental impulses. These subluxations, he believed, caused <strong data-start=\"1801\" data-end=\"1813\">dis-ease<\/strong>, a state of dysfunction that interrupts the body\u2019s natural harmony and potential.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"1919\">Chiropractic Today<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1921\" data-end=\"2130\">Chiropractic continues to evolve as a modern health care discipline, rooted in a <strong data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2039\">philosophy of innate intelligence<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"2045\" data-end=\"2088\">science of spinal-neurological function<\/strong>, and the <strong data-start=\"2098\" data-end=\"2129\">art of specific adjustments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2132\" data-end=\"2310\">Chiropractic is more than a solution for back pain.
